I LOVE THE WHOLE WORLD RIGHT NOW.
It’s a lot more common these days, of course, but back when Sailor Moon started, the instant support and friendship between characters wasn’t nearly as common, it was something special about the manga and helped it stand out. But even today, when it’s a lot more frequent to see women supporting each other in magical girl series, it still strikes me just how instantaneous their support for each other is.
Usagi doesn’t hesitate to exclaim over Ami’s skill with the game, there’s not a single bone of jealousy in her system over something like this, to watch someone she likes be good at something. There’s instant WOW YOU’RE SO GREAT just pouring off Usagi and it’s 100% genuine.
No matter how many awesome series I come across or amazingly supportive female characters I find (AND I WANT THEM ALL!!!!), Usagi will still mean so much to me for the way she’s so great with her friends, both in the way she makes them so easily, cares about them and notices them, and in the way she admires her friends’ talents.
Plus, I love seeing Ami play the game and I’ve always felt like that game was Luna’s way of nudging along the Sailor Senshi to give them hints and maybe gauge their readiness for the next battle they would face and seeing Ami just absolutely, totally NAIL the more intellectual aspects of the game, the timing and finding the weak points and all that excellent STRATEGY that goes into things, which is what she’ll help bring to the table later as part of the group, is wonderful.
And, finally, you know what I love about Ami? She might have been isolated and seemed unfriendly to people, she might have been shown to be shy and a little awkward at times, but you know what she NEVER had to do? Dumb herself down to get along with people. She was fucking AWESOME AS HELL at this game and so she ROCKED IT. She’s whip-smart, she’s brilliant in her studies, and so she rocks the hell out of EVERY TEST SHE TAKES.
There is never any narrative dumping on Ami for being brilliant. Instead, we are shown HELL YEAH SHE’S AMAZING AND ADORABLE AND WONDERFUL, AMI IS PERFECT AS SHE IS. ♥ ♥ ♥
Several times throughout the series, Sailor Pluto is identified as the daughter of Chronos, the deity/personification of time (not to be confused with Cronus, although they’re very frequently mixed up).
Mentioned even more frequently is the implication that Sailor Pluto, unlike the…

There’s a whole lot of women being inspired by other women in this series and it starts right from the beginning. Part of it is just the sheer fun of escaping her everyday life, that glamorous seeming life on the other side of the fence, that she just doesn’t want to have to face being terrible at studying or all the hard work that that takes. But part of it is just that Usagi is 100% here for awesome ladies, just as much as she is 100% here for awesome dudes. She smiles at cute boys, blushes over the hot boys, she thinks girls are pretty, she’s inspired by seeing Sailor V, Usagi is pretty much here for everyone.
But there’s also a lot of how this seems like such fun to her, that she hears about Sailor V at school and thinks that sounds so cool, then she sees a video game, and it’s bright and shiny and fun, it’s an entire world away from her usual life with all its usual worries that she can never seem to get anywhere on, even when she works so hard at studying! (Well, works hard for Usagi.) But with a little support from Motoki-onii-san, she can defeat the enemy in a spectacular flashy move and look cool while doing it! And that probably seems so much better.
So imagine how Usagi must have felt when she went into that first fight, like this was just a game to her, like it was her first level to beat and she had already beaten that Sailor V level earlier today! She even looked just like Sailor V! Naturally, she comes up with a name and a cool pose, it’s very dramatic and fun, because it’s just like that game.
For those first few moments, it must have felt pretty amazing, like this is something she can do to work off a little steam, to feel like there’s a tangible enemy she can beat, and I love that that’s where the first pose came from, that she was having fun in that moment and wanted to strike a video-game-like pose.
The thing is, of course, that it’s not actually a game, she gets hurt pretty quickly and even when it’s nothing major, it’s painful. She realizes that this is her actual life and her actual body that are being put in the middle of this fight, that these people actually want to hurt her, they may even want to kill her, and it all comes crashing down.
But in this moment right here, it’s still new and fun and shiny. The first moments of starting to grow up, the first moments of something new, before the hard stuff sets in, are always like that, and I love Usagi so much for every single moment she goes through here.
